Black Friday Sets Gun Background Check Request Record

It's the biggest single day record, which beat last year's record by 15,000. The two previous records - last year's and that of 185,345 in 2015 - were also recorded on Black Friday. More than 203,000 background checks were requested for gun purchases on Friday.

Gun checks, required for purchases at federally licensed firearm dealers, are not a measure of actual gun sales.

The number of background checks for firearms purchases does not represent the number of firearms sold since more than one firearm can be bought during a single sale or someone can decide not to buy.

The surge in gun sales comes mere days after Attorney General Jeff Sessions ordered a review of the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) after the man who killed 25 people in a church in Texas was allowed to purchase a gun despite having a criminal record. Devin Kelley was able to purchase multiple firearms despite being convicted in a court martial for domestic violence, after the US Air Force failed to enter a previous domestic violence charge into the national database.

The problem has also caught the attention Republican and Democratic lawmakers, who joined forces on legislation that aims to strengthen the database by ensuring federal agencies and states accurately report relevant criminal information to the FBI.

The US House of Representatives Armed Services Committee said earlier this month it would investigate the Air Force's failure to notify the Federal Bureau of Investigation of Kelley's criminal record.
