Doug Fister signs with Texas Rangers

The first official big-league signing has been announced as the Texas Rangers have are bringing in right-handed pitcher Doug Fister on a major league contract, according to Evan Drellich of NBC Sports Boston.

Fister spent the 2017 season with the Boston Red Sox, joining the team as a June waiver claim. His 5-9 record and 4.88 ERA may seem underwhelming on the surface but Fister managed to recover from a rocky start to produce a solid six week stretch that began with his first victory in a Red Sox uniform against the Cleveland Indians.

But it's not unreasonable to think the Red Sox could be in the market for experienced depth, and by signing early, Fister would essentially set the market for that type of starting pitcher. The deal is for one year with a base salary of $3.5 million and a team option for 2019 that includes a $500,000 buyout, a source told The News. In 90.1 innings of work, Fister allowed 87 hits while striking out 83 opposing batters.

Boston's coaching staff helped Fister tinker with his mechanics, including a move to the left side of the rubber to alleviate stress on his delivery. The following year, Fister started 28 games and went 6-14 with a 4.11 ERA. Griffin, and someone from the minor leagues.

Currently, the Red Sox' rotation depth centers on Eduardo Rodriguez, who underwent offseason knee surgery and is not expected to be ready for Opening Day.
