Flies carry more bacteria than first thought, warn scientists

A team of worldwide scientists discovered Friday that maintaining flies away from human food is actually more intelligent than it was already thought before.

But a new study suggests the insects carry far more unsafe bacteria than previously thought, meaning sandwiches are best avoided if they have been contaminated by flies.

Flies analysed from towns and cities carried more bacteria than those collected in stables.

Researchers have found that because flies are the very vessels that transport harmful and sometimes deadly bacteria, the insects can also be used to monitor the diseases circulating in the environment.

In some cases, flies were carrying hundreds of different species of bacteria - many of which were harmful to humans, the scientists said.

The common house fly has 351 types of bacteria and the blowfly which is present in warmer climates have 316 bacteria.

Results of a study at Penn State Eberly College of Science in the United States supports the long-held view that flies contribute to the rapid spread of disease in humans.

The research team even investigated the microbes on individual body parts of the flies, including their legs and wings.

Blowflies and houseflies - both carrion fly species - are often exposed to unhygienic matter because they use feces and decaying organic matter to nurture their young, where they could pick up bacteria that could act as pathogens to humans, plants and animals.

These are easily transferred to surfaces when flies land, with their legs spreading the most microbial organisms.

Scientists found 15 instances of helicobacter pylori bacteria - which causes stomach ulcers - on Brazilian blowflies. The known route of transmission of Helicobacter has never considered flies as a possible vector for the disease, said Schuster.

"It will really make you think twice about eating that potato salad that's been sitting out at your next picnic", Professor Bryant said.

The bacteria are linked with many illnesses such as stomach bugs, blood poisoning and pneumonia, all being a different type of infection. According to them, they gathered the animals around three different continents.

"It might be better to have that picnic in the woods, far away from urban environments, not a central park", said Bryant.

The researchers are optimistic that their study may help public health officials realise the extent of threat caused by pathogen transmission.

After the flies are collected using bait traps, their microbiomes would then be sequenced, giving a picture of what diseases are spreading, thereby acting as an early warning system, the researchers said.

"In fact, the flies could be intentionally released as autonomous bionic drones into even the smallest spaces and crevices and, upon being recaptured, inform about any biotic material they have encountered", said Schuster.
