Arizona Rep. Trent Franks is resigning from Congress

Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz) (left) during a hearing on the District of Columbia Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act at Rayburn House Office Building in Washington on May 23, 2013.

"If this turns out to be true, there won't be that many people who are surprised", the Arizona Republican said, according to the report.

Franks told reporters he would release a statement explaining his decision to step down.

Representing a solidly-Republican swath of Arizona, north of Phoenix, Franks built a reputation as a hard-line conservative since joining Congress in 2003.

Biggs and Schweikert both declined to discuss Franks. It did not elaborate why Franks has chosen to resign.

"I'll let the statement speak for itself", he said off the House floor. He is now serving his eighth term in the United States Congress. He made his fortune in the oil business and also founded a socially conservative think tank.

His Arizona district went big for President Trump in the presidential election, and he was considered a reliable supporter of the president's agenda. Franks won an eighth term last fall by 37 points. Roll Call first reported that Franks was expected to resign.
