Australian parliament approves same-sex marriage

The last several decades of LGBTQIA rights have finally bottled down to this: the House of Representatives have voted to pass the same-sex marriage bill.

The Australian Parliament has voted to allow same-sex marriage across the nation, following a bitter and divisive debate settled by the government polling voters in a much-criticized ballot survey that strongly endorsed change.

The bill passed with only five MPs dissenting.

The Senate passed the same legislation last week 43 votes to 12.

Liberal MP Tim Wilson proposed to his partner Ryan Bolger shortly after the bill was introduced to the lower house.

The House of Representatives is holding its final two-week session of the year, which is giving priority to lifting the ban on same-sex marriage in Australia.

"Australia has done it", Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told the House. All proposed amendments to the bill were knocked back, meaning that marriage equality will become law without special provisions for bakers, florists and civil celebrants to refuse service to same sex marriages. "The question though is we need to get the balances right in terms of the protections of those people who have fundamental beliefs based on religion or otherwise", he added.

A nonbinding postal survey found that 62 percent of Australian respondents wanted gay marriage to be legal.
