Brush fire north of Los Angeles forces evacuations

Mandatory evacuation orders are in place for Lopez Canyon, Kagel Canyon and Little Tujunga Canyon, Los Angeles Police Department Officer Cabrera said.

The family who owns Rancho Padillo lives up on a hill by the ranch and awoke to the Creek fire flames at 3:43 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Firefighters are making some gains as they continue to douse the Creek Fire, which scorched thousands of acres in the Sunland-Tujunga and Sylmar areas. Nearly 1,700 firefighters and other personnel were deployed Thursday against the fire, which was 10 percent contained.

Three firefighters suffered what were considered to be minor injuries Tuesday.

The fire began at around 4:00 a.m. local time, Los Angeles County Fire Department Chief Deputy David Richardson said in a Tuesday afternoon press conference.

The number of areas evacuated because of the Creek Fire has expanded throughout the morning, and a new map (below) shared by the Los Angeles Fire Department shows just how many neighborhoods are affected.

The 210 Freeway was closed in both directions between the Golden State (5) Freeway on the west and the Glendale (2) Freeway.

It was unclear if any structures have burned as a result of the fire, Cabrera said.

More than 20 square miles of residential property were reported as being evacuated.

Two evacuation centers were opened: Sylmar Recreation Center, 13109 Borden Ave.in Sylmar; and Sunland Senior Center, 8640 Fenwick St.in Sunland.

A dozen evacuation centers were opened throughout the San Fernando Valley, and all were accepting evacuees, including those with pets. The fire also forced a mass evacuation of large animals, primarily horses but also others such as alpacas.

An evacuation area for large animals was established at Pierce College, 6201 Winnetka Ave.; and at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center, but the latter was filled to capacity by mid-morning.
