Credit union sues over Mulvaney's CFPB's appointment

Leandra English, current acting director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) meets with Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) in Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C.

A federal credit union in New York City has sued President Donald Trump, saying his acting director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is "trying to minimize its existence".

It says Mulvaney doesn't like the bureau's existence and is trying to minimize it.

The case has been filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan. Her lawyer has indicated that if the decision goes against her, he will appeal.

"We support the CFPB as a protector of our low-income members' financial rights, and fear that the appointment of an acting director beholden to the White House could result in upheaval and ultimate dissolution of this critical agency", said LESPFCU CEO Linda Levy, in a press release.

He declined to comment on specific cases, but said there were two litigation actions he has asked to delay and separately cited the CFPB's case against mortgage company PHH Corp as one that "has issues" without elaborating.

Placing a freeze on the CFPB's collection of any personally identifiable information, such as individual loan level data, until the CFPB improves its data security systems.

Mulvaney this week brought in Republican congressional lawyer Brian Johnson as a senior adviser and plans to quickly bring on board more political hires to help him review the bureau's existing and pending regulations, the budget chief said. English's reply to Mulvaney's motion will be due December 20.
