Digital currency exchange NiceHash says bitcoin worth almost $64 million hacked

It has halted all services for the next 24 hours while it investigates, but thanks to the public blockchain, there's speculation that Nicehash may have lost upward of 4,700 BTC, presently worth more than $63 million Dollars.

While Bitcoin (BTC) passes $14000 (over £10,000) for the first time a 40% increase this month alone the NiceHash website made an official announcement to say that there had been a security breach through their site.

NiceHash is a service that allows users to register and rent or buy cryptocurrency mining/hashing power.

A wallet address circulated by NiceHash users shows that more than US$60m of bitcoins might be affected, according to CoinDesk, the cryptocurrency research and news website.

CNBC reached out to NiceHash Chief Executive Marko Kobal for comment but he was not available at the time of publication.

The service has been showing a mysterious maintenance notification for the entire day already, according to some rumors coming from expert users of the pool and blogger steemit mention it seems possible that NiceHash has been the victim of one of the biggest hacks ever seen on such a platform.

Site operators advised users to change their passwords when the site returns online. The company has paused operations for 24 hours while it figures out exactly how much was swiped and how it was taken.

The site's payment system was compromised and the contents of its bitcoin account have been stolen, it said.

"We are working to verify the precise number of BTC taken", the company said on Wednesday in a statement on its Facebook page. "In addition to undertaking our own investigation, the incident has been reported to the relevant authorities and law enforcement and we are co-operating with them as a matter of urgency", NiceHash said.
