Ermold to run for County Clerk

Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis made global headlines in 2015 when she denied legal marriage license to five gay couples.

Now, one of the men she denied a license to is coming after her seat in 2018. "I stand by her 10,000 percent".

"The county clerk's office has been in the hands of the same family for nearly 35 years", Ermold told the Herald-Leader. He was excited to marry his boyfriend of nearly two decades.

The couple was David Ernold and David Moore.

Among those who were denied a license was Ermold and his partner of more than 15 years, David Moore. That case is still working its way through the courts. "And then it just got so tiresome".

Their visit was recorded, and it received national attention. She stopped issuing marriage licenses, which is the clerk's main job, after same-sex marriage was legalized.

Davis, who said providing the license violated her religious beliefs, continued to withhold the license, even after a federal judge ordered her to issue it, and was jailed briefly.

Davis doesn't object to issuing marriage licenses now that the state Legislature has changed the law so her name is not on the license. Now she's running for her second term.

On his campaign website, Ermold vowed to bring leadership, fairness, and responsibility to the role of county clerk.

He said he couldn't watch Davis continue to hold public office after what she's done to LGBT people-but he realizes how contentious the election is likely to be. While Republican Donald Trump overwhelmingly won the county during the 2016 presidential election, almost all of the local elected officials are Democrats and always have been.

"We have some minds to change and that's going to be hard", Ermold said.

Davis' new political party could be a problem in Rowan County. But local officials in Rowan County have typically been Democrats, the AP noted. Hurst is the boyfriend of a gun victim who defeated an NRA-backed opponent.

On Nov. 7, the Associated Press reported that Ermold was thinking of running for county clerk, in hope of unseating Davis. "Our people want to move on".

"We need to not just symbolize, we need to send a message out to all these people saying it's okay", Ermold said.

And he said his campaign won't focus exclusively on the LGBT rights. "If I'm qualified to do a job, I should be able to do the job".

Davis has been Rowan County clerk since 2014 and worked for her mother, the previous clerk, before that.

Now, he's confident he can defeat Davis in the race despite her having a number of organizations supporting her. Mike Huckabee and Ted Cruz, both former 2016 Republican presidential candidates, also previously supported Davis when she was in jail.

"I'm not being disrespectful to you", she told the pair.
