GM Drivers Can Now Order a Starbucks From Their Car's Touchscreen

This new feature marks the first commerce platform for the on-demand purchase of goods and services.

GM also hopes to use its in-car Marketplace connections to expand purchases of products and services, such as additional access to in-car wifi, from its own replacement parts business and dealer network. With Marketplace, drivers can now order and pay for their favorite coffee - and much more - on the way to work with a simple tap on the dash. GM has a new feature that allows owners of certain vehicles to order coffee from their auto with the tap of a button. "Leveraging connectivity and our unique data capabilities, we have an opportunity to make every trip more productive and give our customers time back", said Santiago Chamorro, vice president for global connected customer experience at GM. GM says about four million United States drivers will gain access to the in-car commerce options starting immediately, with more coming online over the next 12 to 18 months.

"This platform is financed by the merchants", said Chamorro.

The GM Marketplace concept has been under development for more than a year. No separate data plan is required to use the Marketplace.

There will be limits to the functionality of the new marketplace feature since it's created to be used while driving.

Adhering to industry distracted driving guidelines, as well as GM's strict in-house safety guiding principles, GM designs its in-vehicle systems to minimize manual interactions, helping drivers keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel. The system utilizes IBM Watson's machine learning features along with user data. For example, the technology can alert drivesr when they are running low on fuel and direct them through location services to the nearest Shell or Exxon filling station - two of the early fuel stores on the platform - but does not pitch specials or coupons as they drive past a site.

The Marketplace will not be available only in the cars sold from now on but also in those that already have an eligible infotainment system (that can support the app, of course).

The new GM Marketplace will initially roll out in 2017 and 2018 GM-branded vehicles with 4G LTE connectivity and compatible infotainment systems.
