Google's Progressive Web Apps will replace Chrome Apps next year

Google had announced back in August 2016 that it would end Chrome apps across Windows, Mac and Linux platforms citing the reason that less than 1 percent of users were using them.

If it sounds complicated, you can check out the Google Support documentation which takes you through setting up and using Chrome Remote Desktop on your Windows, Mac or Linux PC or Chromebook.

To allow your PC to be accessed, you'll need to install the Chrome Remote Desktop extension from the Chrome Web Store.

Google, in a blog post from August a year ago, said that the apps project had failed, with just about 1 percent of the total users from Windows, Mac, and Linux actually installing and using them on the Chrome browser. These applications which are already being rolled out for Chrome on Android and will function more like full-fledged applications with push notification capabilities and an installable app icon. Both app categories will now be accessible only on Chrome OS and not the desktop. It'll be interesting to see if people care to adopt these once they're widely available. There's still no word on removing Chrome Apps from Chrome OS, though. There are two types of Chrome apps: "packaged apps and hosted apps", Google explained in a blog post from past year.

Google on Wednesday made good on its promise to rid of Chrome Apps. For more information on PWAs, you can visit the dedicated Google developers page here. An example of a PWA is a website that can display webpages in fullscreen. In a message Google recently sent to developers (via Android Police), Google said that it was now working to bring Progressive Web Apps to desktop and that it was targetting a launch date of mid-2018. Microsoft already announced that it's bringing PWAs to Windows 10, while Apple is in early stages to bring it to the Safari web browser.

Google wants to throw yet another app type into the mix, though.
