Google Safe Browsing Extends to Android Apps Requiring User and Device Data

The regulations will come into place in the next "60 days" - let's say, February 1- and a Safe Browsing/ Google Play Protect warning will be shown on all pages leading to the non-compliant apps. "For example, during analytics and crash reportings, (sic) the list of installed packages unrelated to the app may not be transmitted from the device without prominent disclosure and affirmative consent", added Paul Stanton of Google's Safe Browsing Team. And it's not just data-Datally could save your phone's battery life, too, by identifying apps that are doing too much when you're not using them. Whenever that app uses data, the Data Saver bubble will show the current rate of data usage, and users can easily choose to block that app's data use if things start to get out of control. Also, if these apps collect personal data unrelated to the functionality of the app - the developers must highlight this prior to collection and transmission, so the user knows how the data will be used. This covers app functions such as crash reports, where a list of installed apps on a device can not be sent without permission.

GOOGLE IS to crack down on Android apps that aren't transparent about their data collection - even if they weren't actually downloaded from the Play Store. This includes putting the complete text of the privacy policy in the app itself.

The crackdown is a new effort to combat malicious and harmful Android apps and will apply to software distributed through the Play Store as well as third-party Android app markets.

The new changes are similar to an August update to the Personal and Sensitive Information section of Google's Developer Policy Center. It also can't be placed in a privacy policy or terms of service and must not be bundled with non-privacy disclosures. Failure to comply will result in a Safe Browsing warning from Google.

"Google tested Datally in the Philippines for most of 2017, and the insights from the product tests there, shaped the final app".
