How to See the 2017 Geminid Meteor Shower

From December 13-14, one of the most prolific celestial events will take place in the form of the Geminids Meteor Shower.

Observe the Geminids next Wednesday evening, December 13 and Thursday morning, December 14.

The meteor shower appears to come from the Gemini constellation with the streaks caused by tiny dust particles and meteors hitting our atmosphere at tremendous speed and burning up due to friction. When these meteoroids encounter Earth's atmosphere at tremendously high speeds - up to far more than 100,000 miles per hour - they burn up from the friction and produce the brief streaks of light we call meteors.

The Geminids are usually one of the best meteor showers of the year. The US is tipped to have prime astronomical conditions to view the shower.

If the weather is clear Wednesday night next week, our skies are likely to fill with the greatest number of visible shooting stars we've had in quite a few years. This point or "radiant" is in the constellation for which the shower is named.

Geminids meteor shower 2017: Where and how to watch?

The shower is active for a two week period from December 4 to December 17 and with the Moon already set, stargazers can see anywhere from 70 to 120 meteors per hour.

"The Geminids is always a visual treat to experience and document, and this year I wanted to bring that experience to more people through my workshop", Mr Magro said.

Geminids meteor shower 2017: What is it?

The Geminids should be visible to the naked eye across the Central Coast, but areas with high vantage points and minimal light pollution will make for the best viewing. But some of them will be bright meteors, maybe a few brighter than any star or planet, or even as bright as the moon. The few Geminids that do occur then, however, will tend to be "earthgrazers" - meteors with incredibly long flights, sometimes nearly all the way across the sky. It peaks the night of December 13/14 under a slim crescent Moon, whose feeble light won't interfere even after it rises around 3:30 a.m. local time.
