Instagram is testing a standalone messaging app because why not

The move feels strikingly similar to what parent company Facebook did when it separated the messaging experience outside the social network's main app three years ago. "Direct has grown within Instagram over the past four years, but we can make it even better if it stands on its own", Hemal Shah, a product manager at Instagram, told The Verge. The Direct messaging system that was upgraded to replicate Snapchat functionality just earlier this year may become a standalone app supposed to offer you a Snapchat like chatting system that won't interfere with the main goal of Instagram. While a standalone messaging app may not sound like a Snapchat rival at face value, it sure as hell is.

Instagram is spinning out its Direct messaging feature into its own separate app, The Verge first reported.

The private messaging feature of Instagram is to be removed from the service and replaced with a standalone app.

Opening Direct would directly be taking you to the camera to persuade one in making and sharing content.

When you're in Direct on your Inbox page, starting to swipe again the left will reveal an Instagram logo, and completing this swipe will automatically open up the main Instagram app. You can also look at your profile and settings, and view and send messages to other Instagram users.

As of today, Instagram users in Chile, Israel, Italy, Portugal, Turkey, and Uruguay can download Direct on both iOS and Android. When you open Direct, it goes straight to the camera - perhaps in an effort to condition you into creating and sharing content.

Facebook Messenger, which started its journey with 500 million users and a wave of 1-star reviews, now sits at 1.3 billion users, and ratings have improved up to a 3-star average.

Well, get ready for the sequel, as the same thing is about to happen with Instagram. If Instagram decides to release Direct globally, it could become the next big private messaging platform right next to Facebook's Messenger.
