Microsoft removes Google's Chrome installer from the Windows Store

When your download from the Windows Store completes, launching it will simply open a browser window where you'll be prompted to download the Chrome installer.

Unsurprisingly, that app has since been removed by Microsoft. Windows Store apps that browse the web must use HTML and JavaScript engines provided by Windows 10, and Google's Chrome browser uses its own Blink rendering engine. This "app" doesn't actually give you Chrome, but rather a way to install the company's browser, by downloading it from the standard Chrome download page. "We welcome Google to build a Microsoft Store browser app compliant with our Microsoft Store policies", a Microsoft spokesperson told The Verge.

If you want Gmail, Google Calendar, YouTube or Google Maps you will have to use the browser.

For most Windows users, the distinction doesn't matter a great deal. Windows 10 S is incompatible with apps like Google Chrome.

Many readers however suggested it would not last, as it violated Microsoft's policies regarding apps with limited function, and it appears they were right. While we'd like more apps to be available through the Store-if for no other reason than to get the simplified updating and uninstallation-virtually every Windows user already runs a number of non-Store applications anyway. But because Microsoft requires Store apps to use Microsoft's HTML/JavaScript engines, it's unlikely Google will deliver a version of Chrome that meets those requirements. That said, iTunes for the Windows Store was recently delayed, with Apple citing technical issues in bringing it over. It's certainly a weird way to handle things, and looking at some of the reviews on Chrome's Windows Store listing, users aren't too pleased about it.
