NBC Made Payment To Staffer After Sexual Harassment Claim Against Chris Matthews

That reputation further solidified with a weekend report, which originated on Saturday from the The Daily Caller site, about how NBC agreed to a $40,000 severance payment for a Hardball producer who accused Matthews of sexually harassing her through inappropriate comments in 1999.

Over the years, Chris Matthews (host of MSNBC's Hardball) has developed a reputation for saying unfortunate things about women on hot mics, including a 2016 general election season flub in which he drooled over Melania Trump.

It came after she had complained to executives about the anchor's conduct.

The Daily Caller, citing two unnamed sources, first reported the situation of the female staffer, who an assistant producer on his show, Hardball with Chris Matthews, which at that time was on CNBC.

MSNBC added that an internal review of the incident found that Matthew's comments were indeed inappropriate but were not meant to be taken as propositions. The exact nature of Matthews' punishment remains unclear.

MSNBC declined to comment on whether there are other sexual harassment claims in Matthews' history at the company.

The news of the reported settlement comes amid a wave of accusations of sexual misconduct in the entertainment and media industries and others, in what has become a national reckoning of abusive behavior against women by men in positions of power.

In late November, NBC News fired Matt Lauer, longtime host of "The Today Show", after an employee complained about inappropriate behavior.

Matthews, 71, is married to Kathleen Matthews, a former news anchor, since 1980 and they have three children.

Matthews has yet to comment on the sexual assault allegations.
