Nigel Adkins: Hull City appoint former Southampton and Reading boss

Hull City have announced Nigel Adkins as the club's new head coach.

The statement continued: "Adkins, a Championship promotion-winner with Southampton in 2012, will be joined at the KCOM Stadium by his trusted assistant Andy Crosby on an 18-month contract".

Adkins has twice guided Scunthorpe to promotion from League One and steered Saints to the Premier League in 2012 but was dismissed halfway through the following season.

Adkins will oversee his first training session on Thursday ahead of a home clash with Brentford on Saturday.

Adkins, who left his last position at Sheffield United in May 2016, said: "I had a good conversation with the owner until late last night and obviously after the manager left, there was a decision to be made by the present owner".

Slutsky became the first Russian to manage an side in the English League system when he took over in June 2017, but his return of four wins from 20 Sky Bet Championship games led to the end of his tenure.

Adkins has previous experience of winning promotion on his CV.

Hull have a testing run of fixtures coming up, which will test Adkins and his coaching staff, with the Tigers in desperate need of results. I had gone in with a idea when we went to Sheffield United and it didn't work out for us and I thought it was important for me to take a little bit of time out to reflect on what happened.
