Nissan to launch self-driving cars by 2022

Nissan Motor Co. says it's aiming to introduce fully autonomous cars to the market in 2022, as the Japanese carmaker strives to establish itself as a front-runner in driverless technologies.

"Global automakers are looking beyond making and selling cars to survive an industry which is being quickly transformed by new services, and a growing number including General Motors Co are applying their expertise in automated driving functions for mass-market cars to develop mobility services", Reuters notes. The auto giant and Japanese mobile game company DeNA have jointly developed the new driverless vehicle services, dubbed Easy Ride.

A dedicated mobile app will enable customers to choose their destination, hail a vehicle, and pay for the ride all in one place.

Customers will also be able to select recommended local destinations and sightseeing routes should they be tourists, Nissan said.

"With "more freedom of mobility" as its concept, Easy Ride is envisioned as a service for anyone who wants to travel freely to their destination of choice in a robo-vehicle", Nissan said. Only time will tell whether there is any genuine cause for alarm in these trials, but Easy Ride will be monitored remotely, and support multiple languages for tourists in an effort to keep every user safe.

Nissan has informed that during the test, driver will sit behind the steering wheel but the vehicle will be driven by the program developed.

The vehicle offers a driving range of 150 miles.
