Ryan Reynolds is set to catch 'em all as 'Detective Pikachu'

Starring alongside Reynolds will be Justice Smith, who will be seen in the upcoming Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and Big Little Lies actress Kathryn Newton. Reynolds' role is said to be motion-capture in nature. There are even some weird mashups that have been floating around for years that are especially prescient.

The film will be directed by Rob Letterman, who previously directed the honestly-pretty-good Goosebumps movie. Ryan Reynolds certainly is diversifying his portfolio going from wise-cracking Deadpool to Detective Pikachu.

Alex Hirsch and Nicole Perlman wrote the latest draft of the script.

No further details about Detective Pikachu were revealed, but the live action/GCI hybrid film is expected to begin shooting in London in mid-January. Newton is reportedly playing a journalist aiding them along the way. There's a lot of money riding on its success, given the Pokemon animated series, video games and trading cards, which are available in 74 countries. Instead of adapting that specific Pokémon game into a film, Legendary is instead putting the focus on the franchise's most popular character: Pikachu. Universal Pictures is handling distribution of the live-action film outside Japan; Toho will handle distribution in Japan.

Before Reynolds shows up in Detective Pikachu's fedora, he will first return in to cinemas in Deadpool 2, which opens June 1, 2018. Let us know in the comment section below!
