US Military Issues Alert After North Korean Propaganda Found On Multiple Bases

Thursday's defection came almost 40 days after another North Korean soldier crossed the jointly controlled area at the border, the only places where rival troops are only feet away, amid a barrage of bullets fired by colleagues.

Speaking to Al Jazeera from Seoul, Se-Woong Koo, a political analyst and publisher of Korea Expose, a news magazine, said North Korea's economic situation is prompting soldiers and citizens to risk their lives by leaving the country.

He remains in hospital in South Korea.

South Korean military officials said they heard gunfire from the North after South Korea fired its warning shots, but it wasn't clear if the firing was retaliatory.

He underwent several operations to treat his wounds and to remove parasitic worms that doctors believe were caused by poor nutrition among average North Korean soldiers.

China and Russian Federation have proposed a "freeze for freeze" arrangement under which North Korea would stop its nuclear and missile tests in exchange for a halt to the exercises, but there has been little interest from Washington or Pyongyang. -South Korean wartime "decapitation strike" plans against the North Korean leadership.

"Many in the South attribute the decrease to increased surveillance put in place under current North Korean leader Kim Jong-un along the main channel of defections, which is the border between North Korea and China, Se-Woong said". Most defectors avoid such a perilous crossing to the South, instead fleeing through China.

North Korea regularly threatens to destroy South Korea, the United States and Japan, and says its weapons are necessary to counter US aggression.

Still, the flexibility driven by a swarm of drones, which could be immediately retargeted to a moving or a more important site, will improve South Korea's ability to respond quickly in crisis scenarios.

South Korean soldiers fired 20 warning machine gun rounds Thursday, turning back North Korean soldiers apparently pursuing a comrade who had earlier dashed across the rivals' shared border, officials said.

The South Korean soldiers did not return fire.

"Our military secured his safety, and a questioning will be conducted by related agencies to find out the background of his defection and motive, etc", he said. Oh's body was discovered in a pile of leaves and retrieved by South Korean soldiers.

In addition to soldiers defecting, a number of suspected North Korean sailors, both dead and alive, have washed ashore in Japan this year.

The total number of North Koreans who directly defected to the South has also risen to 15 this year, compared to five last year, according to official figures reported by Yonhap news agency.

South Korea's Unification Ministry also said maritime police had found two North Korean men drifting in a small boat off the coast on Wednesday. The two men requested asylum in South Korea and authorities are investigating their identities and claims.
