All blood types are needed to help ensure a sufficient blood supply is available for patients - especially platelet and type O negative and B negative donors. The next Independence American Red Cross Blood Drive is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 15 from 1 to 6 p.m.at the First Presbyterian Church, 115 6th Avenue NW.

"Even temporary disruptions to blood and platelet donations can diminish the availability for hospital patients", Jay said.

"I'm a physician and I know how much blood we give to patients and how desperate the need is right now", Mary Adler said."There's a lot of people having surgery".

Type O negative: The blood type that can be transfused to nearly everyone and is what doctors reach for in trauma situations.

"It's important that people who are eligible to donate come out regularly, make those appointments and keep those appointments", explained Kelly Isenor, spokesperson for American Red Cross CT Blood Services Region.

Type B negative can be transfused to Rh-positive or negative patients. RapidPass can now be completed on mobile devices and through the Blood Donor App. Hrouda was 25 weeks pregnant with her fourth child when she began bleeding.

The Red Cross provides information on its website about where you can donate. "It is safe to say that without their time and donations, Rusher and I would not be here today".

With snow finally moving out of the area organizations like the red cross are trying to make up ground. The Red Cross must collect more than 13,000 blood donations every day for patients at approximately 2,600 hospitals across the country.

Platelets, a key clotting component of blood often needed by cancer patients, must be transfused within five days of donation and, therefore, are always in high demand.
