ANC Denies Reports About President Zuma's Demands For Stepping Down

Several ANC insiders familiar with negotiations on Zuma's future told the Mail and Guardian that one of the key requirements would be that ANC MP Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma takes over as the country's interim president after he steps down.

The ruling African National Congress (ANC) on Friday denied press report about South African President Jacob's Zuma's demands and conditions for stepping down. This includes Energy Minister David Mahlobo and State Security Minister Bongani Bongo.

But sources told the Mail & Guardian that the negotiations had deadlocked this week with ANC officials refusing to guarantee Zuma's conditions.

Zuma and Ramaphosa seem to be at loggerheads and both are not willing to concede, according to the report.

But, the ANC's National Executive Committee met for the first time Wednesday since the party's leadership election, at which it emerged that Zuma's position was not discussed.

"The Zuma trigger gives a glimpse of how the rand will react if Zuma does step down early, although this possibility is increasingly being priced in", said Christopher Shiells, a senior emerging market analyst at Informa Global Markets.

Another NEC meeting is expected in the next few weeks.

ANC spokesperson Zizi Kodwa reportedly said the ANC was aware of discussions between Zuma and Ramaphosa about "how to we ensure Luthuli House remains a centre of power without undermining the office of the president of the republic", but said he knew nothing of Zuma's reported conditions.

Among those barred from joining the top leaders is ANC chief whip in parliament Jackson Mthembu, former Eastern Cape Premier Noxolo Kiviet, King Sabatha Dalindyebo mayor Dumani Zozo as well as former NEC and NWC member Fikile Xasa are some of the people who could enter the home.
