Arsene Wenger called referee 'not honest' and 'a disgrace' in rant

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger called referee Mike Dean "a disgrace" in the Gunners' 1-1 draw against West Brom at the end of previous year, the Evening Standard reports.

In the Premier League fixture between West Bromwich Albion and Arsenal on New Year's Eve, Dean gave the Baggies a last-minute penalty, which was converted to deny Arsenal all three points.

The report stated that Wenger later went to the referees' changing room and called Mike Dean "a disgrace".

The referee said Wenger accused the official of "not being honest".

A independent disciplinary hearing on January 5 gave Wenger a three-game touchline ban and £40,000 fine for the incident but the panel's written reasons were only published today.

Dean adjudged Calum Chambers to have handled Kieran Gibbs' cross in the 89th minute, with Jay Rodriguez converting the spot-kick to secure the home side a 1-1 draw.

"He replied, "I maintain what I say, you're not honest. you've done this to us many times before, you're supposed to be professional, you're a disgrace".

The Frenchman was also warned about his comments before and after Arsenal's 2-2 draw with Chelsea on January 3, when he again complained about the West Brom game, saying Dean "saw what he wanted to see" and suggested there was a refereeing bias against his team.

The report continues: "However, Mr Wenger, as per his written statement, is an incredibly experienced football manager".

In the end, it settled for a four-game standard ban and £50,000 fine, knocking a game off the ban and £10,000 from the fine for Wenger's speedy admission of guilt.

On that occasion, Wenger was charged with verbally abusing and pushing fourth official Anthony Taylor after being sent off.
