Blow for Bayern as Lewandowski and Hummels ruled out of Leverkusen clash

Heynckes confirmed at a news conference that Lewandowski and defender Mats Hummels will miss the trip to Leverkusen after the duo were unable to take a full part in training this week.

Bayern look certain to win the league once again.

Franck Ribery and James Rodriguez were among the goals as Bayern Munich defeated Bayer Leverkusen 3-1 in a Bundesliga clash at the BayArena.

For Bayern however, the win means that they now sit top of the league, with a 14 point gap between themselves and second place Schalke 04.

Including recent friendlies during the break, Bayern have won 17 of their last 18 games in all competitions.

The first goal came about through poor marking at the corner, with Julian Brandt losing Vidal at the back post, and the defence unable to clear the ball before Martinez was on hand to score.

Bayern defeated Leverkusen in the first game of the season 3-1, with Niklas Süle, Corentin Tolisso, and Lewandowski scoring.

- Heynckes to stay on?

In further team news, Heynckes said: "Joshua Kimmich makes the squad but he has had a cold and back problems so I will have to weigh up whether he starts as well".

The 72-year-old insists he will leave in May, having turned the team's fortunes around since replacing Ancelotti when Bayern were five points adrift of then-leaders Borussia Dortmund.

The 26-year-old striker has scored 28 goals for Hoffenheim since joining from Dutch side Heerenveen in 2015, this includes an impressive nine goals in 16 top-flight matches this season.

The Bavarian powerhouse also secured favorable draws in the German Cup and Champions League - against third-division Paderborn and Turkish side Besiktas, respectively - boosting confidence of another treble under Jupp Heynckes, the veteran coach revered by all at the club. Leverkusen definitely don't want to start falling to the wrong end of that crowd, and a shocking win over Bayern would not only help them start to gain separation from the pack, it would help them gain some much-needed momentum to keep pulling away.
