The weather service issued wind chill warnings for various days this weekend for parts of Vermont, New York, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Maine and New Hampshire.

Wind chill and freeze warnings stretched from New England to OH and Pennsylvania, while the National Weather Service warned of freezing rain in Missouri and areas to the northeast. It was 8 degrees in Philadelphia and New York City, with wind chills ranging from minus 9 to minus 11.

The closest experience we've had to this kind of event was the Blizzard of January 1978, when the pressure plummeted to 28.47 inches Columbus, and a wind gust peaked at 69 miles per hour, as the temperature plunged to near zero and the snow piled up in historic 10- to 25-foot drifts.

The wind chills could bring jaw-clenching temperatures further north. It tied for the second coldest place in the world Saturday morning. Residents of Boston and its suburbs were cleaning up Saturday after the tide that came in Thursday, flooding streets and forcing some residents to be evacuate as the water started to freeze.

People struggle against wind and snow during Storm Grayson at the Jersey shore in Long Branch, New Jersey. Others were cleaning up from the storm that dropped more than a foot of snow in some spots earlier in the week. Some said their cars felt like icebox even though they had the heat on full blast. She was headed to work at a local supermarket, and was expecting it to be packed.

In response to the winter storm, various airlines have cancelled a combined 4,020 flights within the country, as well as in and out of it. Majority of the cancelled flights were in New York, Boston, and New Jersey.

The state of MA has seen its fair share of chaos, including the unfortunate record-breaking coastal flooding in Boston, beating out the flood from the Blizzard of 1978. The victim was taken to a hospital and later died from the injuries.

In Providence and Newport, at least 40 people were treated for various weather-related conditions, from heart attacks, snowblower or shovelling injuries, frostbite and more, according to The Providence Journal.

Monday is expected to be the first day above freezing since last month.

In neighboring New Hampshire, the ambient air temperature on Mount Washington plunged to -36 F (minus 38C), two degrees short of a record low for January 6.

Even more temperate locations won't escape the cold, with the mercury dipping into the single digits in Baltimore and Washington, DC, during the weekend - about 20 degrees below normal for this time of year.
