Brightline's 'higher speed' train service will begin this weekend in Florida

Brightline's 'higher speed' train service will begin this weekend in Florida

This Saturday, Brightline will begin introductory service between Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach for $10 one-way, or $20 roundtrip.

One of the company's chief investors, Wes Edens from Fortress Investment Group, announced at the opening that Brightline expects to complete construction on its Miami station and begin service between Fort Lauderdale and Miami, in six to eight weeks. The five four-car train sets will each hold 240 people.

The company has marketed the railroad to Millennials and business travelers as a faster and more convenient alternative to Florida's often-crowded highways.

The $1.5 billion dollar project started in 2013 with train speeds ranging anywhere between 79 miles an hour between Miami and West Palm Beach and up to 125 miles per hour to and back from Orlando once that route is finished. Meanwhile, Brightline announced that Patrick Goddard has been promoted to president.

Seniors, active military and veterans will receive a 10 percent discount.

Brightline on Thursday afternoon tweeted that its new ticketing website was experiencing delays and "booking glitches" as a result of "overwhelming excitement". Introductory service will include trips between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m.

A one-way ride will cost $10 for Brightline's basic "Smart" package and $15 for the more high-end "Select" package, featuring leather seats, free parking, free food, beverages and free premium guest lounge access.

The Miami station will be near the corner of Northwest Second Avenue and Sixth Street; the Fort Lauderdale station at 101 NW Second Ave.; the West Palm Beach station near the corner of Evernia Street and South Rosemary Avenue.

Though popular in South Florida and in Brevard County, Brightline has faced staunch opposition and legal challenges from the Treasure Coast, where many residents believe the railroad would endanger public safety, pollute the environment and decrease quality of life.
