Cause of Tom Petty's death revealed to be an accidental drug overdose

Petty's family issued a statement today, signed by Petty's wife Dana Petty and daughter Adria Petty, following the release of the coroner's report.

The medical examiner's news release said the autopsy found these drugs in Petty's system: fentanyl, oxycodone, acetyl fentanyl and despropionyl fentanyl, which are opioids; temazepam and alprazolam, which are sedatives; and citalopram, an antidepressant.

His family said he was on tour, even with the fractured hip, when his condition worsened.

The musician, 66, was found unconscious and in cardiac arrest at his Malibu home on October 3 and died at the UCLA Medical Center that evening. On the date he had the heart attack he was told his hip had graduated to a full-on break that made the pain unbearable and may have caused the overuse of meds. But Petty's official death certificate, released about a week later, listed his cause of death as "deferred" pending an autopsy.

Petty died at 66 of "multisystem organ failure due to resuscitated cardiopulmonary arrest due to mixed drug toxicity", according to a brief statement. Many overdose deaths in BC can be attributed to taking medication.

Petty's family also wrote that they hope his death would spark "a further discussion on the opioid crisis". "Many people who overdose begin with a legitimate injury or simply do not understand the potency and deadly nature of these medications". Drug deaths involving fentanyl more than doubled from 2015 to 2016, according to the governmental account of nationwide drug deaths previous year.

In 2016, the pop singer Prince was found to have died from an accidental overdose of self-administered fentanyl, a synthetic opiate estimated to be more than 50 times more powerful than heroin. "You have to be really cautious, particularly, if you're taking one drug and another drug - like a muscle relaxant or an anti-anxiety drug, or even alcohol - you can overdose from them".

Petty is known for such hits as "American Girl", "I Won't Back Down", and "Free Fallin'". The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which inducted Petty and the Heartbreakers in 2002, praised them as "durable, resourceful, hard-working, likable and unpretentious".

Petty and the Heartbreakers had finished a summer tour with three performances at the Hollywood Bowl not long before his death.
