Cold snap to stretch through first week of 2018

By early on New Year's Day morning, low temperatures will bottom out around 10 below zero, and wind chills could fall to as low as -30. Wind chills today are expected to be dangerously cold through the rest of the day and again overnight into Tuesday morning.

The Arctic air mass that's kept the last week bitterly cold in MI isn't letting up as we cross into 2018. The cold wind chills will cause frostbite in as little as 30 minutes to exposed skin.

TUESDAY: Mostly sunny and very cold. Actual air temperatures will be in the low teens and single digits. Wind chills will range anywhere from 10 to 15 degrees below zero tonight.

Well, New Year's Day will be warmer than New Year's Eve. Of course, mornings get a brutally cold start too. Afternoon temperatures are in the teens to near 20 degrees. It will be sunny today with highs only near 5 degrees.

Weather service forecasters predict wind chills to drop Sunday night to as low as -16 in Sandusky. Wednesday starts sunny and then clouds increase in the afternoon. High temperatures struggle to escape the teens while lows are in the single digits in many areas.

Temperatures pop into the 20s on Wednesday as our wind goes around to the south. Temperatures will finally moderate heading into the middle of the week. For now, it appears as though the core of the storm will remain offshore, but it will be so sprawling that even here in New England we'll see snow and gusty winds.
