Colorado homelessness programs to receive $30.6 million in federal grants

This year, at the national level, HUD plans to send $2 billion in the grants to more than 7,300 programs helping the homeless.

The HUD's Continuum of Care grants are meant to move the homeless off the streets and into transitional or permanent housing.

The Continuum of Care grants announced today provide critically needed housing and support services to individuals and families experiencing homelessness across the state.

The awards consider the cost of funding current programs, how well projects perform and housing costs.

In Western New York, HUD estimated there were 1,042 people experiencing homelessness on a single night in 2017, a 3 percent increase since 2016.

New federal funding is heading to New Jersey to help support efforts to put an end to homelessness in the state.

Orange County's number of homeless also rose to 4,792 in 2017, up from 4,452 in 2015, according to the 2017 Point-in-Time Count & Survey.

Organizations based in Chicago will receive the most in funding, with $68.3 million, and programs in Cook County will receive roughly $12.1 million.

The HUD findings were similar to the results of the 2017 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count released in June by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, which put the county's homeless total at 57,794 - an increase of 23 percent over the previous count.

In December, HUD reported homelessness increased in the a whole, especially among individuals experiencing long-term chronic homelessness.

Ben Carson announced the money was coming through Continuum of Care grants. HUD's 2017 Annual Homeless Assessment Report to Congress found that 553,742 persons experienced homelessness on a single night in 2017, an increase of.7 percent since previous year.
