Cougar QB Hilinski found dead

"Officers arrived and found Tyler Hilinski, 21 years old, deceased in the apartment with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head".

Police were checking on Hilinski after he did not show up for practice earlier in the day, according to ESPN.

WSU coach Mike Leach: 'He was an incredible young man and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him was better for it'. He posted, "Trudi and I are holding Tyler Hilinski's family, friends and the WSU community in our hearts today".

"Please keep my family in your prayers tonight", Hilinski's younger brother Ryan said on Twitter.

Hilinski is from Claremont, California, and went to high school at nearby Upland. Drew Bledsoe, a Wazzu alum and 14-year National Football League veteran, has a son on the Cougars team, to whom he says Hilinski served as "a great friend and mentor".

In the release, Johnson said the team was gathered and informed of the news, and counseling and mental health services have been provided to the players.

A press conference scheduled for Wednesday to announce new athletic director Pat Chun was rescheduled after Tuesday's events.

Hilinski played 11 games in his Cougars career, passing for 1,149 yards and seven touchdowns. Hilinski was expected to be the starter for the Cougars next season. The former NFL QB is a Washington State product and his son, John, now is a quarterback for the Cougars, having just wrapped up his freshman season.

'Hilinski, who was 25-of-33 for 240 yards, with three touchdowns and an interception in the game, was mobbed by WSU fans who rushed the field and lifted the redshirt sophomore into the air and carried him off the field, ' reported. They stated that he was a great personality and incredible young man. On Wednesday he said, "Every human life is precious".

In the school press release Tuesday night, WSU provided information for students needing immediate assistance.
