El-Zakzaky makes public appearance after 2yrs in DSS detention

The leader of Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky says he is getting better, dismissing rumors that he was dead.

El-Zakzaky who is in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), told journalists on Saturday in Abuja that he is alive and well.

At the brief meeting with journalists, El-Zakzaky who wore cervical collar, an indication that he suffered an injury to his neck at a point in time, said though he was a bit relieved, he was severely ill. The rumour was denied by his lawyer, Femi Falana.

"So it was my own doctors who examined me". Before, I'm used to being examined by security doctors, but this time, I did not agree.

Speaking to THISDAY on the health condition of the IMN leader, a senior DSS official said: "His health remains stable and good".

The IMN leader and his wife were arrested on December 14, 2015in Zaria following a clampdown on Shiites by the Nigerian Army.

Explaining the reasons for showing him to the public with his wife, the spokesperson of DSS, Mr. Nnanna Nnochiri, said that it was basically to dispel his death rumour.

At least 350 Shia members were killed in the onslaught which has elicited criticisms of the army by human rights groups, including Amnesty International.

The Federal Government has refused to obey the ruling of a Federal High Court which ordered their unconditional release in 2016.

Since the arrest and detention of the group's leader, his followers have been holding a series of protests in some cities in the country, especially Abija calling for his release.
