False Ballistic Missile Alarm Frightens Hawaii

"At breakfast everyone got an emergency alert with sirens that we had less than 10 minutes to seek shelter because a ballistic missile has been launched at Hawaii. There is no incoming missile to Hawaii". It instructed people to seek shelter and noted "this is not a drill".

A second emergency alert was sent to phones in Hawaii 38 minutes after the initial message confirming the false alarm.

"Hawaii - this is a false alarm", wrote Democratic Representative Tulsi Gabbard on Twitter.

Multiple people on Twitter have reported seeing an emergency alert about a ballistic missile threat inbound to Hawaii.

Hawaii Senator Brian Schatz tweeted the incident was "a false alarm based on a human error".

The message was accidentally sent at 8.07am local time (6.07pm GMT).

NORAD spokesman Lt. Commander Joe Nawroo said that they were trying to establish how the serious command and control error was made. Today's alert was a mistake, but the Age of Stupid we all live in is very real and every bit as scary. "Last fall, Hawaii started having drills, but no staff told us this".

"The Warning Message received by the National Weather Service from Hawaii state officials has been confirmed to be a test message".

"There is no missile threat", the Democratic senator tweeted. He said he was still in bed when the phone started going off "like insane".
