Fired Programmer James Damore Sues Google for Discrimination - Against White Men

Former Google engineer James Damore, known for circulating a controversial diversity memo that led to his firing at Google in August of a year ago, is now suing Google for discrimination in a lawsuit that aims to represent anyone working for Google who believes they have faced discrimination at the company on account of their "perceived conservative political views", "their male gender", or "their Caucasian race".

Two former Google employees have accused the company of discriminating against white conservative men in a class action claim. Damore is part of a class action lawsuit, which includes another engineer, David Gudeman. It also claimed that "men and women biologically differ in many ways" and "women generally (have) a harder time negotiating salary, asking for raises, speaking up and leading". He claimed that women's "neuroticism" and men's "higher drive for status" are among the factors that contribute to gender disparities in tech.

The lawsuit, seeking monetary and punitive damages, was filed by Dhillon Law Group, which is owned by Republican attorney Harmeet Dhillon. That discrimination, according to the legal filing, impacts both employees and prominent right-wing voices that might visit Google.

The suit goes through exhaustive details of Damore, the memorandum he put together to point out how Google could still hire in women and minorities without lowering the bar of employment quality with diversity quotas, and how women could be assigned to jobs better suited to the strengths of their gender rather than trying to shoehorn them into positions where they didn't necessarily excel. They want to represent other Google employees and former employees who they claimed were "ostracised, belittled and punished" by the company for their political views and for being white males.

An engineer fired from Google last summer over a controversial memo is suing the company for discrimination.

Damore was sacked from Google, and while many people cheered this move, some conservative onlookers claimed the engineer actually had a legal case against the tech giant. In it, he says the "presence of Caucasians and males was mocked with "boos" during companywide weekly meetings", while female workers were celebrated "solely due to their gender".

There are dozens upon dozens of pages in the suit with memes, e-mails, messages, posts, letters, and documents from Google employees exercising anti-Conservative views, pro-violence rhetoric, and invectives directed at straight white males. Google has said it has strong policies against workplace retaliation, harassment and discrimination.

"We look forward to defending against Mr Damore's lawsuit in court", a Google spokesperson said in a statement. Google terminated Gudeman in 2016 after he made comments suggesting a Muslim colleague had a link to terrorism. She claimed Google has cultivated a "Lord of the Flies mentality", where "someone can be singled out and group shamed" for expressing views or identities that are deemed unpopular by management.

The complaints in Damore's lawsuit are numerous.
