In Xian, an eastern departure point for the ancient Silk Road, Macron said on Monday that China's equivalent modern-day "Belt and Road" trade initiative could not be one way - a clear suggestion that Europe expected to be able to sell into China just as smoothly.

"The partnership with China is a strategic partnership, we need to structure relations in terms of intellectual property, structure greater access to the Chinese market, allow Chinese investments in France and open data reciprocally", said the chief of the French state.

Xi pledged $124 billion for the plan at a summit in May but it has faced suspicion in Western capitals that it is intended more to assert Chinese influence than Beijing's professed desire to spread prosperity.

They announced a "China-France Year of Environment" to deepen cooperation.

A short video Macron posted on social media went viral among Chinese internet users, who were impressed with the French president's efforts to learn a phrase in their language.

During an exclusive interview with ahead of his trip, Macron explained the reasons behind this decision. The French leader is making his first visit to China.

Macron is on the second leg of a three-day state visit in China with a delegation of 50 business leaders he hopes will help reduce a 30-billion-euro ($36-billion) trade deficit with China.

The French leader downplayed the lack of other big deals during his visit, saying other countries had trumpeted big figures in the past that masked more modest realities.

The French Development Agency and the state-run China Development Bank are due to sign a co-operation agreement for co-financing of projects to fight climate change in Africa.

"Our beef now has no access (to China) for sanitary reasons".

"To greet his Chinese host, Macron gave Xi a horse, named Vesuvius, as a gift. It's a symbol of French excellence", an Elysee official said.
