Fusion GPS Testimony Shows FBI Believed Dossier Without Verification

Republicans have sought to discredit the dossier and Fusion GPS, while Democrats pointed to the transcript released Tuesday as proof that Steele, Fusion GPS and the Federal Bureau of Investigation had reason to have legitimate concerns about Trump's campaign and Russian Federation.

Simpson also said Steele was told that the Federal Bureau of Investigation had someone inside Trump's network providing agents with information - a claim he also made in an op-ed for the New York Times last week.

Mr Trump has always dismissed the claims of the dossier as nothing more than a politically motivated smear. Did Simpson share with others that Steele was going to the Federal Bureau of Investigation?

Cohen, who is named in the dossier, said BuzzFeed and several of its staffers defamed him by publishing the 35-page document, which contained a mix of truths, falsehoods and unverified rumours about interactions between people close to Trump and Russian figures. He added that the Federal Bureau of Investigation had a "walk-in" whistleblower who was someone in Trump's orbit.

Simpson's political intelligence firm commissioned a dossier into Trump's Russian Federation ties, and Republicans have used Simpson as a cudgel against the probe into the White House, saying that it helped spur the investigation and should be discredited.

"All we sort of wanted was for the government to do its job", Simpson said, "and we were concerned whether the information we had provided previously had ever, you know, risen to the leadership level of the Federal Bureau of Investigation".

The express terms under which Simpson testified do not appear in the transcript. "Like if you're a lawyer and, you know, you find out about a crime, in a lot of countries you must report that". They demanded that the transcripts from their Congressional testimony be released to the public in order to clear up the misinformation Republicans are spreading about the company and about Steele.

A front-page New York Times article on October 31 about the Trump-Russia investigation said the FBI had found no conclusive link between Trump and Russia.

Simpson okayed Steele taking it to a contact in the Federal Bureau of Investigation because Steele had better connections there than he did.

"We've gotta count on Mueller being the only place that's going to ultimately get to the facts here", Murphy said.

It has since emerged that there was an active FBI counterintelligence investigation, which began in July 2016 but which the bureau kept secret.

Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., referred Christopher Steele, the former British intelligence officer who compiled a dossier with allegations concerning President Trump and Russian Federation, to the Justice Department for investigation.

"He [Steele] thought from his perspective there was an issue - a security issue about whether a presidential candidate was being blackmailed", Simpson said.

"It's a false allegation", he said. A person close to the investigation said Fusion GPS has long anxious that Steele's overseas sources could be in danger, given a handful of killings that took place in the months after the dossier's existence became known.
