Girl killed by runaway SUV a cancer survivor

Camila Torcato was diagnosed with cancer when she was only around 2 years old.

Toronto Police have said the father was about to help his daughter into his Mecedes Benz SUV when an unattended Hyundai Sante Fe - left running by another parent picking up their child - rolled up a slight incline across Ianhall Rd. and pinned them against the driver's side of his vehicle. Police originally told CBC Toronto the child was six. She died Monday night.

According to the newspaper, an empty SUV rolled toward them, effectively pinning the two against their own auto at the St. Raphael Catholic School.

She was rushed to hospital via emergency run but later died. "She was a very sweet girl, shy, but very sweet; my mind is filled with her memories".

"There will be extra support at the school because we do know that it happened around dismissal time", she said.

What makes her death even sadder, was that it occurred the day before her anniversary of finishing chemotherapy.

"You could certainly call it a freak accident, that's for sure", Miller said.

'It would be a year now after finishing chemotherapy and this just happened yesterday, ' Torcato said Tuesday.

"A attractive 5-year-old girl is dead".

Toronto Catholic District School Board communications manager Emmy Milne said the board's thoughts and prayers are with the family but that their focus is also on making sure students at the school get counselling after the incident. "We are investigating that to the very best of our ability", Toronto Police Superintendent Scott Baptist said.

Flowers and tributes have been left outside St. Raphael Catholic School in Toronto, in honor of Camila and the school is now working on making a memorial table.

Camila's friends and family have created a GoFundMe to help the Torcato family deal with financial stress.
