Government shutdown blocks overseas troops from watching title games

AFN must count as a non-essential service, as anything deemed essential for everyday living in the US continues to function as normal during a government shutdown.

Because AFN is run by the Department of Defense, operation of the network came to a halt when the government shut down at midnight.

Both games were to be shown on the Armed Forces Network, but the shutdown took the network off the air.

Saturday was the first day of the shutdown. According to Pro Football Talk, servicemen and women with access to USO Centers will be able to watch the games free of charge through the NFL GamePass.

Early Saturday morning, Defense Department personnel and their families overseas woke up in extreme confusion as part of their lives were disrupted by the shutdown of the Government.

"Under a government shutdown, sports broadcasts are not considered an essential activity".

It didn't take long for some DOD operations to grind to a halt: American Forces Network, which provides entertainment and command information to USA servicemembers worldwide through its television and radio services, was dark early Saturday morning in Europe.

The American Forces Network, which provides entertainment and command information to American military overseas and was scheduled to telecast the AFC and NFC title games, stopped broadcasting Saturday in Europe, Stars and Stripes reported.

According to Stars and Stripes, the AFN has been playing classical music since the shutdown started, and that's likely what's going to be playing on Sunday unless the National Football League and the government are able to figure something out that would allow the military to watch the games on the channel. "No NFL divisional championship games ... flawless timing ... I bet members of Congress are gonna watch it", one person wrote.

But one thing that the Democrats can never be accused of is doing what is in the best interests of those who serve and who for some odd reason they seem to view as adversarial forces.
