Gulf Power Sending Crews to Puerto Rico

- After 112 days without power, students and teachers at a school in Puerto Rico erupted with cheers of joy, dancing and running through the halls ringing bells when the electricity was finally restored. A small sample on what life on the island is like: This week, a school at a school had its light turned on for the first time in 112 days.

Puerto Rico was hit hard by Hurricane Maria, with the entire island losing power on 20 September when the storm made landfall.

Some have not had power since Hurricane Irma impacted the area earlier that same month. "Gulf Power crews are storm-ready to handle the hard job in Puerto Rico in this mutual assistance effort". On Wednesday, the director of Puerto Rico's financial authority, AAFAF, urged USA officials to hasten their decision-making process for providing disaster relief.

The situation would be different if the U.S. Congress approves the project that presented congressmen Bernie Sahnders and Elizabeth Warren in which they demand 146 billion dollars for the reconstruction of Puerto Rico.

Several other Gulf Power employees have already been deployed in Puerto Rico, working to determine the damage and help develop a coordinated restoration plan. Portela's comments followed a January 9th letter from the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which said Puerto Rico could not begin drawing on the loan because its cash balances are too high. "Funds will be provided. when the commonwealth's central cash balance decreases to a certain level", FEMA said.
