Gym chain bans cable news

"In fact, we did make the decision to remove cable news channels from our Life Time screens", Natalie Bushaw, senior director of public relations and internal communications, said in an e-mail.

A regular at the Life Time in Bloomington wrote that his fitness center of choice "has had Fox, CNN, and MSNBC, along with ESPN and other channels playing simultaneously on about a dozen screens, and there's always a machine available in front of whichever channel you like". She added that local news stations would still be shown.

Life Time fitness says the change was prompted by "negative or politically charged content" that doesn't mesh with its healthy life philosophy.

Life Time health clubs have decided the news these days isn't exactly healthy for its clients.

Bushaw declined to disclose how many members have complained about cable news channels, but said it has been a growing issue "over years, not weeks or months". Life Time clubs, which are now located in 36 major markets in the USA and Canada, also have WiFi, meaning members can watch news on their own devices as they please.

Life Time Fitness members will notice something different about their local gym as they set out to accomplish new fitness goals for the year. It aims to provide a comprehensive experience "that goes well beyond fitness to encompass the entire spectrum of daily life for individuals, couples and families of all ages".

The post on Twitter drew both supportive and negative comments. One man who said he "enjoys consuming news and politics" was "disappointed" with the announcement.

"For many of us it's the only time to watch the news!" tweeted Grant Napear, a sports radio host based in Sacramento.
