Hamas official injured as vehicle explodes in southern Lebanon

An official in the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas was wounded in a vehicle bomb blast in southern Lebanon today, military and medical sources said.

Hamas leader Jihad Taha blamed Israel for the attack.

Hamas did not immediately issue a statement on the blast.

Medical sources reported that he sustained serious injuries to his legs.

Hamdan was "slightly wounded" in the attack, a Hamas official in Sidon, Ayman Shanaa, told Palestinian television station Paltoday.

Firefighters rushed to the scene to put out the flames, while security forces cordoned off the area.

The Red Cross confirmed that there was only one person wounded in the blast and said he had been transported to hospital in a civilian vehicle.

Sidon, which lies some 40 kilometres south of the capital Beirut, is home to two of Lebanon's 12 Palestinian refugee camps.

The group has previously accused Israel of being involved in the assassination of a number of its members inside and outside Palestine.
