Iran rejects Trump demands for renegotiation of nuclear deal

However, when Trump was elected, Riyadh and Tel Aviv found a new strong ally in their quest to discredit the deal and lobby the US government against the Iranian government.

At the same time the USA imposed fresh sanctions on 14 individuals and entities over alleged rights abuses.

The White House wants European Union signatories to agree permanent restrictions on Iran's uranium enrichment. Under the current deal they are set to expire in 2025.

Trump also wants to terminate the phased expiration dates of various limitations placed on Iran's nuclear program.

In August, US President Donald Trump signed into law a new package of sanctions drafted by US lawmakers.

The president called for European allies to strike a deal fixing the terms of the global agreement, which unfroze key Iranian financial assets in exchange for a reduction in its nuclear programs.

The US sanctions also targeted two other Iranian officials whom the administration said are responsible for ordering abuses against citizens, including the denial of medical care and access to legal representation for protesters in Iranian jails.

"We are targeting the Iranian regime, including the head of Iran's judiciary, for its appalling mistreatment of its citizens, including those imprisoned exclusively for exercising their right to freedom of peaceful assembly, and for censoring its own people as they stand up in protest against their government", Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said.

He said the nuclear deal is "not renegotiable and rather than repeating exhausted rhetoric, the U.S. must bring itself into full compliance -just like Iran".

Describing sanctions against Larijani as "hostile action", Iran's Foreign Ministry said the move "crossed all red lines of conduct in the global community and is a violation of worldwide law and will surely be answered by a serious reaction of the Islamic Republic", state media reported.

It added that Trump had continued to "take hostile measures against the Iranian people and repeating the threats that have failed many times".

"As a first step, we will coordinate with the E3 and the other EU Member States to jointly assess the statement and its implication", the Spokesperson on the Iran Nuclear Deal said in a statement on Friday.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif by phone that implementation of the deal had not been "derailed" but would face "some new complicating factors", the state news agency Xinhua reported.

KELEMEN: Well, he's waiving the sanctions that he's required to under this nuclear deal.

The president revoked a 2012 presidential executive order that slapped sanctions on companies that purchased oil from Iran, conducted transactions with its national oil company or helped Iran buy previous metals and USA banknotes. But his explicit warning to Europe that the deal must be fixed by the time the next sanctions waivers are due in the spring creates a high-stakes diplomatic deadline that will be hard to meet. Iran says its nuclear programme is only for peaceful purposes and that it will stick to the accord as long as the other signatories respect it, but will "shred" the deal if Washington pulls out.

While Trump approved a sanctions waiver, the treasury department made a decision to impose new, targeted sanctions against 14 Iranian entities and people.

"Either fix the deal's disastrous flaws, or the United States will withdraw", he said.

Ryabkov said the USA withdrawal from the deal would damage other global agreements.

The officials notably did not say that Trump expected the other two nations party to the deal - Russian Federation and China - to join in the revision of the deal. In exchange, Iran received billions of dollars in sanctions relief. "He wants to deny Iran access to nuclear weapons forever and not just for 10 years", one of the officials said.

What have other countries said?

One official said Trump would be open to remaining in a modified deal if it were made permanent.
