The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not able to speak publicly about the ongoing investigation, said the pedestrian was slightly injured.

French police found a bag dropped by one of the five robbers containing the $5.62 million worth of jewels stolen from the five-star Paris hotel on Wednesday night.

The audacious robbery attempt was carried out on Wednesday evening, when a gang of ax-wielding thieves stormed the hotel, busted into display cases and snatched the precious jewelry.

Its well-guarded buildings include the Justice Ministry, high-end boutiques and the 19th-century Ritz.

Workers cleaned up shattered glass Thursday morning and started to fix damage from the robbery.

Jean-Michel Huguet, a representative of the French police union said that the criminals had "entered by the service entrance, smashed the jewellery stands, [and] grabbed jewels that were clearly expensive with the help of axes".

Three of the gang were detained while fleeing the scene and an AFP journalist said some roads around the hotel were sealed off by security forces following the incident. Three men were arrested as they tried to flee by the way they came in with bags of gems and watches worth over four million euros ($4.8 million) but came up against locked doors.

The accomplices outside fled, one on a motorcycle and another in a vehicle.

Other jewels were found scattered amid the debris of the shattered display cases during overnight cleanup efforts, the official told The Associated Press.

The three men arrested, all around 30 years old, are from the Seine-Saint-Denis area north of Paris, and are "well known to the police for armed robbery, violence and receiving stolen goods", a source close to the inquiry said.

The hotel, where rooms start at 1,000 euros a night, was operating as usual Thursday. Kim Kardashian West said she lost millions of dollars' worth of jewelry when she was robbed at gunpoint in a Paris apartment in October 2016.

The Ritz was an especially luxurious target.

It was at the Ritz that Diana, Princess of Wales, spent her last night in 1997 before the auto crash that killed her and her lover Dodi Fayed, al-Fayed's son.
