Keillor Responds To Sexual Misconduct Allegations

Beginning in November 2017, the investigator reviewed documents and interviewed employees of Garrison's companies, MPR employees, and others for information about the allegations. Reporter Matt Sepic has our story.

Keillor, 75, retired in 2016 as host of "Prairie Home", a Saturday evening radio variety show he created in 1974.

After initially firing on-air personality Garrison Keillor over an incident in which he touched the back of a woman colleague, Minnesota Public Radio released new allegations today from numerous sources alleging much worse behavior by the network's longtime host.

"MPR said in a statement that Keillor was accused by a woman who worked on his 'A Prairie Home Companion" radio show of dozens of sexually inappropriate incidents over several years, including requests for sexual contact and explicit sexual communications and touching", The New York Post reports.

Patricia McFadden, who worked for "The Writer's Almanac" in 1998, filed a wrongful termination lawsuit against Keillor and MPR, and claimed that Keillor had a "pattern and practice of abusive conduct" that included "hostile and demeaning" emails and memos. Keillor said at the time that it was an accidental touch. McTaggart says the investigation has been thorough. "The irony is that while MPR has been careful to protect Garrison's privacy and not hurry any decisions, others have rushed to judge and criticize MPR's actions without knowing the facts". MPR said that employee refused to identify the alleged victim or detail what happened to her, and MPR didn't get specifics of the allegations until it received letters from the former employee September 29 and from the alleged victim October 22.

Before Keillor's alleged misbehavior was made public, he wrote an, published November 28, defending Al Franken after accused the former senator of kissing and grabbing her without her consent. It found that he had at least two consensual romantic relationships with women in workplaces he led.

SEPIC: Yes. Keillor's production company offered a Keillor subordinate who'd been romantically involved with him $16,000.

One question asked if MPR had "unfairly tarnished" Mr. Keillor's reputation; another asked why MPR was "so ungrateful to Garrison for his many years of service". In 1999, another woman, Patricia McFadden, was sacked from Keillor's "Writer's Almanac" program and sued Minnesota Public Radio.

The outlet also says Keillor told women he worked with that he was attracted to or aroused by them. And it should not be an excuse to behave badly and treat others so poorly, especially women.

MOLLY HILGENBERG: I don't even really remember my reaction. And I was like, that is so wildly inappropriate, you know, in my mind.

According to The Star Tribune, Keillor told the paper, "I put my hand on a woman's bare back". "None of those incidents figure in the "inappropriate behavior" cited by MPR when it severed business ties", they say. The offense - sending a sexual limerick to fellow employees.
