Labour unions rally at Tim Hortons locations over minimum wage response

And behind the doors of other local businesses, owners are reassuring their employees face-to-face. "So increasing it will make people want to stay at a minimum-wage job".

The government justifies this increase by referencing the multiplier effect.

Other people, and I include myself in this category, would rather pay more for some goods and services than see people lose their jobs. "She will not be swayed by business owners, some of whom are very wealthy, to back away from her passion of caring for those who are less fortunate". The minimum wage is scheduled to rise again to $15 in 2019.

As of January 1, 2018, the minimum wage in the province of Ontario, Canada was raised from $11.60 per hour to $14.00, by the current provincial government.

"They need to get in front of this". Shorter term employees will have to pay 75 percent of the cost of these benefits if they wish to continue to receive them.

Wynne's reaction was quoted by Financial Post: "When I read the reports about Ron Joyce, Jr., who is a man whose family founded Tim Hortons, the chain was sold for billions of dollars, and when I read how he was treating his employees, it just felt to me like this was a pretty clear act of bullying".

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne.

"I know the parent company is saying 'Oh, it's these rogue franchise owners, '" says Balducci.

A spokesperson for the association said she was not aware of what was discussed on the call.

But the number of franchises reportedly making cuts has grown.

Now the popular Canadian-born company is speaking out against the actions of a "reckless few" and insisting it stands by its employees during what it calls a "sudden transition".

Tim Hortons said it's committed to helping franchisees work through the employment law changes. Of course Wynne actually doesn't care how much Ontario workers make; all she cares about is being re-elected in the upcoming June election.

The plan has angered many in the business community, who say they don't object to the increase itself but the speed with which it is being implemented.

In a statement Monday, Tim Hortons head office said franchisees could offset costs by analyzing their top-line sales, operational efficiencies, and savings on equipment and costs such as waste management. And an Ottawa union is starting a hotline for employees in the province to tell their stories about what is happening to them.

Labour Minister Kevin Flynn noted, however, that the vast majority of businesses are complying with the new minimum wage.

The main problem with the actions of both the franchisees and the company is how it is being played out politically.

Progressive Conservative MPP John Yakabuski said the government was warned repeatedly by small businesses that they would have difficulty absorbing the 21% increase in compensation labour costs. The franchisees could have shown they were taking the steps they took out of necessity, countering the argument they were punishing employees.

The company owns two restaurants in Ontario.

"For one full-time employee at a Tim Hortons location, this would amount to approximately $6,968.26 per annum in increased costs to the owner", it said. Their business consists of selling low cost products in high volumes.

Restaurant Brands Inc. did not immediately respond to requests for comment and Tim Hortons' headquarters said, "we have nothing further to add". Not even paying for breaks when they are on their feet all day?

They really played it badly. It has been squeezing the franchisees to increase corporate profits ever since they purchased Tim Hortons in 2014.
