Liam Neeson: Bit of a witch hunt over sex allegations

Neeson's comments come a day after he criticised the gender wage gap in Hollywood as "fucking disgraceful", while at the same time admitting he wouldn't take a pay cut so his female co-stars could be paid more.

In recent months there has been a growing list of sexual misconduct allegations in Hollywood and Liam Neeson thinks that "there is a bit of a witch hunt happening".

Speaking on RTÉ's Late Late Show last night, Neeson said that the movement was "healthy" and allegations such as those were "across every industry", but that "the focus was on Hollywood" at the moment.

"There's some people, famous people, being suddenly accused of touching some girl's knee or something, and suddenly they're being dropped from their program or something", he continued. When you're doing a play, and you're with your family - other actors, technicians - you do silly things.

When Late Late Show host Ryan Tubridy namechecked Kevin Spacey and Dustin Hoffman as examples of other men who have been accused of inappropriate behaviour, Neeson appeared unconvinced. I'm not saying I've done similar things like what he did.

Mr Hoffman faces sexual misconduct allegations from two women, with a third woman accusing him of exposing himself to her in a hotel room while she was a teenager.

The 80-year-old double Oscar winner's lawyer described the claims as "defamatory falsehoods".

Neeson spoke about the incident involving radio presenter and writer Garrison Keillor, who lost his job at Minnesota Public Radio a year ago after allegations of inappropriate behaviour.

The actor was addressing the outpouring of sexual harassment and assault allegations which have rocked Hollywood in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal.

The actor said the allegations reported by media are in "every industry".

He also spoke about the mistreatment of female labourers he has seen through his work as a UNICEF ambassador.

Another Twitter user clarified: "Liam Neeson: witch hunt is a term for false accusations against the vulnerable by the powerful, so it's not an accurate description of holding privileged men in power accountable for their actions. "Childhood stuff". Yeah, if there's a line to be drawn Liam, I don't see it's there".

But @RealSarahFlynn wrote: "You mightn't like it but at least he's authentic and I don't think calling elements of it a witch hunt is that terribly untrue".
