Macron vows to keep up pace of reforms

Macron had strongly criticized Russian media outlets for allegedly spreading false information shortly before his election in May.

"We need to recover a European ambition to be a more sovereign, more united, more democratic Europe", Mr Macron said.

Paris: French President Emmanuel Macron Wednesday expressed his concern over unrest in Iran during a telephone conversation with counterpart Hassan Rouhani and called for "restraint and appeasement", his office said.

According to the Elysee, Macron will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping on January 9 after visiting the ancient imperial capital of Xi'an.

While Theresa May has warned social media giants to shape up or face fines, France, Germany and Ireland are instituting new laws to target fake news.

He also said limits would be put on how much could be spent on sponsored news material.

What spooked critics the most was a proposal that would allow judges during election campaigns to block content deemed to be fake news, shutting down user accounts and even entire websites found to be peddling fake news.

"If we want to protect our liberal democracies, we must have strong legislation". Xi and Macron, who took office in May, have spoken twice by phone and met in Hamburg, Germany, during the G20 Summit previous year.

Mr Macron added: 'Platforms will have more transparency obligations imposed on them regarding sponsored content, making the identity of sponsors and those who control them public'.

The televised New Year's speech was the 40-year-old president's first year-end address following his electoral victory in May. The French President specifically turned his attention to the Russian media, accusing TV channel RT that during the campaign it caused disinformation through its website and social media.

French president vows to press on with drive for more integration.
