Militants kill mother-daughter polio workers in Pakistan

Gunmen in Pakistan shot and killed two women working on a polio eradication campaign on Thursday, the latest in a string of attacks on efforts to protect children from the crippling and sometimes deadly disease.

According to police, the victims have been identified as Sakina Bibi and Rizwana.

Bodies and the injured person have been shifted to hospital.

Unidentified armed men opened fire in the area of Civil Lines Police Station, Quetta.

Earlier today, two policemen were shot dead in a targeted attack in the Zarghoon Road area in Quetta.

Acting DIG Aitzaz Goraya informed media that evidence has been collected from the crime scene.

Pakistan is one of only two countries where new polio cases still surface, although the number of affected kids declined to eight in 2017 compared to 306 in 2014.

Pakistan regularly launches anti-polio drives despite threats from the Taliban, who perceive the campaign as part of a Western conspiracy and claim it will sterilize Pakistani children.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks yet, but Islamist militants are known to carry out such attacks as they oppose immunisation as un-Islamic. On January 16, unidentified attackers gunned down a police officer on the city's Raisani Road.
