Ohio State Basketball: Chris Holtman's Buckeyes deserves attention

Keita Bates-Diop scored a career-high 32 points, and the surprising Buckeyes stunned No. 1 Michigan State, 80-64, on January 7, bringing the fans at Value City Arena streaming onto the court to celebrate.

The Buckeyes thumped a Michigan State team that was leading the nation in most offensive categories but shot poorly and committed a dozen turnovers.

In Friday's 4-1 Ohio State win, the Spartans found themselves trailing 4-0 until the middle of the third period, and three of OSU's goals were scored within the first minute of either the first or second periods.

Meanwhile, Michigan beat IL 79-69 on Saturday for its seventh straight win. Meanwhile the Spartans laid an egg in their first true road game of the season against an opponent not named Rutgers. "We ran up against a team that played awfully well, and the place was hopping".

Much of that led to stagnant ball movement that Izzo said slowed up the offense. The Spartans misfired consistently from behind the arc, while the Buckeyes enjoyed more success scoring at the rim against Michigan State than any other team has this season.

Conversely, Sunday's game continued what has been an underwhelming sophomore season from Miles Bridges, which may impact his National Basketball Association draft stock. We're just coming off 30 assists on 32 baskets (against Maryland) and we had (13 against Ohio State) and just dribbled the ball.

"We need great preparation, but I don't know if I've seen a better team in my six-plus years as a head coach".

Kam Williams opened up the second half with a dunk, and the Buckeyes never trailed again. Sophomore forward Miles Bridges got his to the tune of 17 points and seven rebounds, but Michigan State shot 39 percent from the field overall, unable to match the home-court advantage of the Buckeyes.

Izzo chalked that up to a team that's still young and still not used to life as the No. 1 team in the country. 2 Buckeyes beat Wisconsin 49-48.

With No. 2 Duke losing Saturday night, No. 3 Villanova could return to their former No. 1 spot in the new rankings.

Michigan State The discombobulated Spartans let the game slip away at the end of the first half and couldn't adjust in the second.

Ohio State The Buckeyes made the most of their momentum and played solid defense to pull off the upset. Shaquille Morris scored 15 points to lead a balanced scoring effort, and No. 9 Wichita State blew out South Florida 95-57. "But it depends if in that game, were we doing things that could carry over to the next couple games?"

They could have suffered a lopsided loss, and that would have told us that the team still has a long way to go. "This is the start of it".

The 12-0 run for Ohio State at the end of the first half included a critical technical foul on Izzo, and the coach was placing plenty of blame on himself.

"I thought we were resilient", said Ohio State coach Steve Rohlik.

Struggling on the road has been a theme with this team since I started covering them past year.
