Pokemon Go Adds Surfing Pikachu as Part of Monthly Event

Niantic revealed Pokemon GO Community Day this week as a monthly event that'll take place at parks around the world. The idea of this event is that players will all crowd together in communal spaces, in a short time window, and everyone will remember the community spirit of Pokemon from its opening weeks. The Pokemon, which will only be available for a few hours, will know an exclusive move that was previously unavailable for that Pokemon. This bonuses include increased XP or Stardust, and lure modules will last three hours during it. The very first Community Day is just around the corner, too, arriving on January 20th, 2018.

For January's event, Niantic has already confirmed the special Pokemon will be Surfing Pikachu.

The reward for your troubles (and social investment) will be a Pokemon that knows an exclusive move - this could give you the edge in a battle, so you'll want to keep a close eye on it (and perhaps don't turn it into candy at the drop of a hat). During the event, players will earn double XP.

What better way to kick off the Pokemon Go Community Day than to feature the beloved mascot Pikachu.

Pokemon Go will likely never reach the same peaks that it hit in 2016, but it's nice to see Niantic scheduling more events for a game that desperately needs them. This day's event session will take place at a different time dependent on each trainer's region of the world. The cost of the lures as well as every other item in the Pokemon GO in-game store will be... exactly the same as they always are. Plus, some of these Community Day Pokemon could add some much needed variety to gyms and the Pokemon Go metagame, which often stagnates in between Pokemon releases.
