Rory McIlroy reveals he's been dealing with heart condition

Four-time major golf champion Rory McIlroy has revealed an "irregularity" with his heart that he has "to keep on top of".

The four-time major victor was first made aware of an irregularity with his heart after suffering a viral infection in China in 2016.

"I suffered a really bad viral infection in China 18 months ago", McIlroy said. "I needed the reset that I've just had. Hey, I was planning on doing that anyway", he said.

"The rib's fine, no problems whatsoever - I had an MRI scan on my thoracic spin and all was OK, " McIlroy told the newspaper. I just don't feel that now. I've beaten them before.

"It's nice to be world number one, sure, and I will get back there, but it's all about winning tournaments", he said.

The Northern Ireland golfer will return from four-month layoff from a rib injury when he takes to the field of the Abu Dhabi Championship on Thursday. "I knew within myself that I couldn't compete at the end of last season because I hadn't done the work beforehand, and that's because I hadn't been fit enough and if you can't practice, you can't compete". I know exactly what I can do.

"Yesterday, I did an interview with the Daily Telegraph where I spoke about a range of topics regarding the last three months of my life", McIlroy wrote.

"He was referring to the European Tour's Abu Dhabi Championship, where he will begin a busy schedule in the build up to April's U.S. Masters, the only major he needs to win to complete the career grand slam".

McIlroy will face stiff competition at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship from a field which includes world No 1 Dustin Johnson, Race to Dubai victor - and defending Abu Dhabi champion - Tommy Fleetwood, former British Open champion Henrik Stenson, and Olympic gold medallist Justin Rose.
